Fancy pram floorboards; Recently begun – this is an excellent project for new boatbuilders to get involved with.

Cover for the Darcy; We have obtained a couple of large sections of tarp, which would help make a great cover for the Darcy. Darcy needs a cover to prevent her filling up with rainwater. We need to make a frame for the tarp, and shape the tarp to fit.

Flashing for the Shed; Not a glamorous project, but the Shed needs some maintenance too. We have obtained a piece of flashing for installation above the sliding doors. Hopefully this will cut down on the rain blowing in through the gap at the top of the doors. There are several other small maintenance items that need attention as weather permits (roof leaks, window sealing, etc.)

Spiling; As part of the ongoing construction of the Gartside Pram, Ed Sturgeon has offered to put on a workshop in mid-January on spiling planks. This is essential knowledge for us to continue with the planking on the pram. This will be a very interesting workshop, and all aspiring boat builders are encouraged to attend!

Winter activities in the Boat Shed

Winter is here and over the past few weeks we have been doing maintenance work on the Sam Mc and the Vogler. The Sam Mc received new bottom paint, and then new topsides paint as well. The seats have been removed for refinishing, and the top of the transom glued back together. The Vogler has been scraped and sanded inside in preparation for paint once the weather warms up.

Upcoming projects include making floorboards for the Fancy Pram, and resumption of the construction of the Gartside Pram.

Work on Gartside Pram Continues

The shed is set up nicely, the boats are in the water awaiting their next voyages, and work on the Gartside Pram continues throughout the summer.

Work Has Resumed on “The Gartside Pram”

This weekend work resumed on the Paul Gartside designed pram at the boat shed. The planks that Gerry Stensgaard made at the Vancouver boat show have been affixed and are ready for clench nailing and final bevelling. Then to spile and shape the next strake. Only four or five more to go!

D’Arcy Has Lettering Renewed

Thanks to Kathy Bond, a conservator at the Vancouver Art Gallery, D’Arcy has freshly painted lettering. Ms. Bond supports our efforts restoring and maintaining heritage boats and we truly appreciate the favour. Thank you Kathy.

D’Arcy, Vogler, Sam Mc Launched

The weather was perfect for the re-launching of the Oarlock and Sail Wooden Boat Club’s fleet last saturday. After a liberal dousing of champagne on the bows by Ms. Leanne O’Grady, the transom of D’Arcy dipped into the cool waters of English Bay for the first time in two years. Ms. O’Grady was first to take to the oars and many members had a chance to row the sixteen-foot vessel. All agreed that she is a fine rowing craft.

The Sam Mc and Vogler were taken sailing and rowing respectively. A fine breeze filled the Sam Mc’s Sail and she tacked and jibed more than a few times. Many members took the Vogler for a tour of the harbour. All in attendance seemed pleased to be out in a boat or mingling dockside. All three vessels now rest dockside awaiting their next voyage.
